Astronaut James F. Reilly, STS-104 mission specialist, participates in space history as he joins fellow astronaut and mission specialist Michael L. Gernhardt (out of frame) in utilizing the new Quest Airlock for the first ever space walk to egress from the International Space Station (ISS). The major objective of the mission was to install and activate the airlock, which completed the second phase of construction on the ISS. The airlock accommodates both United States and Russian space suits and was designed and built at the Marshall Space Flight Center by the Boeing Company.

This Expedition Seven image, taken while aboard the International Space Station (ISS), shows the limb of the Earth at the bottom transitioning into the orange-colored stratosphere, the lowest and most dense portion of the Earth's atmosphere. The troposphere ends abruptly at the tropopause, which appears in the image as the sharp boundary between the orange- and blue-colored atmosphere. The silvery blue noctilucent clouds extend far above the Earth's troposphere. The silver of the setting moon is visible at upper right.

STS-113, the 16th American assembly flight and 112th overall American flight to the International Space Station (ISS), launched on November 23, 2002 from Kennedy's launch pad 39A aboard the Space Shuttle Orbiter Endeavour. The main mission objective was the the installation and activation of the Port 1 Integrated Truss Assembly (P1). The first major component installed on the left side of the Station, the P1 truss provides an additional three External Thermal Control System radiators. Weighing in at 27,506 pounds, the P1 truss is 45 feet (13.7 meters) long, 15 feet (4.6 meters) wide, and 13 feet (4 meters) high. Three space walks, aided by the use of the Robotic Manipulator Systems of both the Shuttle and the Station, were performed in the installation of P1. In this photograph astronaut and mission specialist John B. Herrington, (center left frame), participates in the mission's third space walk. The forward section of the Space Shuttle Endeavour, docked to the Pressurized Mating Adapter (PMA-2) on the ISS, is visible center frame. The station's Canadarm2 appears to stand in between the shuttle and Herrington.

This STS-113 photograph shows an incredible view of the Space Shuttle Endeavour's payload bay. The blackness of space, Earth's moon (upper right frame), and a thin slice of Earth's horizon which runs vertically across the photograph, form the back drop for this photograph. The remote manipulator system (RMS) robotic arm is visible in lower right frame. Headed toward Earth orbit and a link up with the International Space Station (ISS), the Space Shuttle Atlantis lifted off from Kennedy Space Center on June 8, 2007. Aboard were STS-117 astronauts James F. Reilly II, Steven R. Swanson, Patrick G. Forrester and John D. “Danny” Olivas, all mission specialists; Frederick W. (Rick) Sturckow, commander; Lee J. Archambault, pilot; and Clayton Anderson, mission specialist who joined the Expedition 15 crew. The crew members along with the Expedition 15 crew spent 8 days resuming construction on the ISS with the installation of the second and third starboard truss segments (S3 and S4) with Photovoltaic Radiator (PVR), and retracted the P6 starboard solar array wing and radiator for later use.

'Tis the season for holiday decorating and tree-trimming. Not to be left out, astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have photographed a festive-looking nearby planetary nebula called NGC 5189. The intricate structure of this bright gaseous nebula resembles a glass-blown holiday ornament with a glowing ribbon entwined.  Planetary nebulae represent the final brief stage in the life of a medium-sized star like our sun. While consuming the last of the fuel in its core, the dying star expels a large portion of its outer envelope. This material then becomes heated by the radiation from the stellar remnant and radiates, producing glowing clouds of gas that can show complex structures, as the ejection of mass from the star is uneven in both time and direction.
