NASA Technicians Stacking Ares I-X Upper Stage Simulator Segments Image
Technicians in NASA's Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building in Cape Canaveral are carefully stacking segment 7 onto segment 6 of the Ares I-X upper stage simulator. This precisely coordinated operation involves aligning and securing large sections that together simulate the mass and shape of the Ares I-X upper stage. Comprised of 11 segments, each 18 feet in diameter, the upper stage will guide the rocket through the second phase of its ascent during its 2009 test flight. Ideal for use in articles on NASA, space engineering, aerospace technology, and educational materials about space missions.
